About Franklin
Franklin sits 3.2 miles northeast of our shop, completely surrounded by Hardyston Township and Hamburg Borough but fiercely independent. The borough covers about 4.6 square miles with clear boundaries: Hamburg Turnpike marks the northern edge near Hamburg Borough, Route 23 runs along the southwest toward Hardyston, Buckwheat Road winds up the eastern hillside toward Hamburg Mountain, and Franklin Pond Road stretches west into the Wallkill River Valley.
What defines Franklin most? Its mining heritage. From the 1840s until 1954, the Franklin Mine was one of the most productive zinc operations in the United States. When the mine closed, the community could have faded. Instead, Franklin embraced what made it unique: the world's greatest diversity of fluorescent minerals, over 350 species, many found nowhere else on Earth.
That's why Franklin calls itself "The Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World." It's not marketing. It's identity.
The Franklin Mineral Museum on Evans Street preserves this legacy. Visitors come from across the country to see minerals that glow under ultraviolet light in colors you didn't know existed. For residents, it's a point of pride. This town survived, adapted, and turned its past into something people travel to experience.
Downtown Franklin centers on Main Street, where late 1800s and early 1900s commercial buildings create a walkable historic core. The scale feels compact compared to the sprawling developments in surrounding townships. You can park once and walk to the Borough Hall, the library, local shops, and restaurants. It's the kind of downtown that hosts parades, not just traffic.
Franklin's Neighborhoods
Historic Downtown: Main Street forms the heart, running from Evans Street past the Mineral Museum to Rutherford Avenue. Borough Hall sits at 46 Main Street, the Fire Department at 127 Main Street. The downtown has that preserved small-town character&mdashno chain stores, just local businesses and civic buildings that have been there for decades.
Buckwheat Road Area: The eastern hillside climbs toward Hamburg Mountain along Buckwheat Road, Oak Street, and Pine Street. Single-family homes line the winding roads, some with steep driveways that require attention in winter. The elevation gives views and proximity to mountain trails.
Edison and Wheatsworth: Southern Franklin near Route 23 features the Edison Road and Wheatsworth Road neighborhoods. Ranch homes and split-levels from the 1950s through 1970s dominate. This area sits closest to our Wantage shop&mdashliterally the first Franklin neighborhood you reach driving north on Route 23.
Hamburg Turnpike Corridor: Route 694 runs along Franklin's northern edge, mixing commercial businesses (auto services, convenience stores) with residential streets like Beaver Run Road. St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church sits in this area at 86 Beaver Run Road.
Franklin Pond Area: Western neighborhoods along Franklin Pond Road and Munsonhurst Road have a more rural character. Properties sit on larger lots near Franklin Pond and the Wallkill River. The roads are narrower, the pace quieter, the feel more secluded than downtown.
Rutherford and Sunset Residential: South of downtown, Rutherford Avenue, Sunset Lane, and Ridge Road form family neighborhoods of mid-century homes. The streets are well-established, the houses well-maintained, the kind of area where people raise kids and stay.
